Your Unique Approach to Learning
If you were asked to speak about your organization’s unique approach to learning, what would you say?
If you can answer this question, you’re on your way to articulating your value proposition — the special value that your learning approach is bringing to your organization. There are many different ways to approach development and many different philosophies one can have. So, when our clients come to us for advice and ideas, we always start by nailing down your value prop.
There’s a practical reason to start here. It’s our experience that the most vocal teams with the most visible contributions get the most funding (we’re looking at you, Marketing!). We know that investing in employee development has the potential to transform the business by boosting performance and creating the right conditions for innovation. But what specific tactics are we using? And how are we explaining it leadership? Our leaders want to know that our learning approach has been carefully crafted to support the goals of the business. Having a clear value proposition gives you and your team something to be vocal about. It also gives you a defined vision to work toward — something bigger than your annual projects — and a clear goal to measure progress against.
So, you’re on the big stage. All eyes are on you. How will you describe your unique approach to learning? If you’re shopping for a value prop, here are four different approaches to spark ideas.
What steps are you taking related to your value prop this year?
When you can articulate your value proposition, the next step is to break it down and choose something to tackle for this year. One of our clients is focused on employee-led development — and 2021 is all about awareness. We worked with them to surface employees’ current behaviors and attitudes toward development. Together we identified what success will look like. We brainstormed messages that will resonate. The team is now developing an awareness campaign and will be measuring the results. Keeping a close eye on their progress will help them make adjustments as necessary — it will also give them data to tell their story to leadership.
